I recently learned the origin of this song. Apparently the author was a slave ship owner. One night at sea he was confronted by a terrible storm. He heard the tune being moaned by one of his prisoners and he wrote the words to Amazing Grace. It is said he turned his ship around, returned his prisoners, and sold his ship. He then became a prominent activist against slave trade.
